Together, they proved scientifically that dogs learn best through cooperation, patience, and positive reinforcement.
Yet today, we are witnessing a tragic, unexpected U-turn. A new generation of pet owners otherwise highly educated, socially conscious, and deeply committed to mental health are picking up prong collars, electronic shock devices, and tight slip leads at an alarming rate. Why is a generation that champions "gentle parenting" turning to physical suppression for their animals?

The Lost Art of Waiting
To understand why we are suddenly failing our dogs, we have to look at how we have fundamentally altered the human nervous system's relationship with time.
I grew up in an analogue world, a world where patience wasn’t a virtue you consciously practiced; it was a baseline structural requirement of daily life. She poured her adolescent anxiety into gymnastics and learning musical instruments—hobbies where you cannot double-tap your way to a perfect landing or swipe your way to mastering a chord. She learned that mastery takes time, and that frustration is simply the first step of learning. To this day, she still knows to seek solace away from digital information, devouring books to relax her brain.
Contrast that with the world we have built for the digital generation. Today, there are no pause points. The phone follows them into their bedrooms, streaming unedited global conflict and clinical perfection into their minds twenty-four hours a day. It was easier for me to escape the Troubles as a child than it is for them to escape the classroom bullies today. Their nervous systems are locked in a permanent, exhausting state of fight-or-flight, leaving them with zero baseline tolerance for slow, frustrating processes.
The Algorithmic Trap and the Quick Fix
Because the modern human brain has been systematically stripped of its frustration tolerance, the dog training industry has adapted to feed the beast.
True, science-backed behaviour modification is, frankly, terrible for social media engagement. It is profoundly un-cinematic. It looks like a trainer standing thirty feet away from a trigger, quietly rewarding a dog for looking away, or calmly waiting for a puppy to choose to sit. There are no sudden movements, no dramatic music drops, and no instant transformations. In the economy of attention, biological truth is boring. It doesn't trigger the viewer's dopamine, and it is routinely buried by the algorithm.
But do you know what does skyrocket to the top of your feed? The illusion of the quick fix.
Open TikTok or Instagram Reels, and the formula is identical. A chaotic, lunging, highly stressed dog is shown on screen. A trainer steps in, slips a metal prong collar around the dog's neck, or fastens an electronic collar. The dog lunges again, the trainer delivers a sharp physical correction, and the dog instantly freezes, drops its head, and walks in a rigid heel.
To a digital mind conditioned to expect an immediate software patch for every glitch, this looks like magic. It is an algorithmic masterpiece.
What the 30-second clip doesn't show is the biological cost of that instant compliance: behavioural suppression driven by acute fear.
The dog hasn't learned how to cope with the world, its brain has simply flooded with panic, causing it to shut down to avoid further pain. Worse still, this psychological fallout is frequently twisted by clever marketing to look like a happy, loyal bond. When a puppy displays appeasement behaviours, low-lying body language, pinned-back ears, and desperate lip-licking paired with frantic wags, it isn't happily trying to please. It is trying to pacify a threat and turn off the pain.
Because a correction comes silently from a distance, the puppy doesn't realize the human is causing it; it assumes the environment itself is an unpredictable minefield. This forces a deep trauma bond where the terrified animal clings to the handler for safety. Influencers point to this desperate clinging and call it love, when it is actually environmental terror masquerading as attachment.
But the algorithm doesn't care about canine psychology. It tracks the fact that you watched the video to the end. It tracks the furious debate exploding in the comments section between outraged animal lovers and desperate pet owners. The platform translates this chaos into high-value engagement and pushes the video to hundreds of thousands of other screens.
Sanitizing the Pain
Older generations were notoriously heavy-handed in their training. They used heavy chains and physical force, but they were never afraid to admit it. They looked you in the eye and told you they were forcing compliance. It was upfront; it was physical graft. In fact, they actively told us they were being "cruel to be kind." There was an honest, albeit harsh, acknowledgment of what they were doing. Those older trainers would have looked at a remote-control shock collar with utter contempt. To them, pressing a button from a hundred yards away would have felt like cheating.
But modern marketing has done something truly insidious: it has sanitized the pain.
By wrapping an aversive tool in sleek matte-black plastic, or rendering the remote in a variety of bright, trendy lifestyle colours designed to be worn casually around your neck like a fitness tracker, advertisers have transformed an instrument of punishment into a fashionable accessory. They have made pain palatable to the very generation that claims to reject violence.
Because the handler stands at a distance, casually smoothing down a sleek plastic button on a brightly coloured gadget, the physical feedback loop is broken. The human doesn't feel the tension or the impact, so their conscience stays clean while the dog pays the price. The modern handler doesn't have to face the personal discomfort of being cruel to be kind. Instead, they can buy a device that lets them inflict discomfort from a distance while keeping their progressive, "Be Kind" branding entirely intact.
The trap is worsened by a masterful piece of generational marketing. The online trainers pushing these tools know that today's youth value empathy and clear boundaries. They know a young, progressive owner would instantly reject a trainer who says, “We are going to shock this dog into submission.”
So, they rebrand the violence into comforting tech-speak. They don't call it a shock collar anymore, they call it an "E-collar." This creates a literal buffer between the action of sending an electrical current to a dog's neck and the human conscience.
They tell desperate owners it's just a "gentle tap" or a form of "harmless stim."They mask the discomfort behind phrases like "simple communication" or reassure handlers that it is applied at such a "low level" that it acts as a mere whisper or a "TENS machine" contraction.
They frame aversive tools not as instruments of force, but as sophisticated, high-tech translation devices that bridge the gap between human and dog.
When a devastated, chronically over-stimulated owner is struggling with a reactive puppy, they are already drowning in comparison culture. They see peers on their feeds taking perfect, calm dogs to trendy cafes and into the office. Desperate to cure their public anxiety and achieve that curated lifestyle aesthetic, they click the digital link in the bio. With a single, next-day-delivery purchase, they bypass decades of animal welfare progress completely unaware that they have been manipulated by an algorithm that prioritizes outrage over education, and speed over life.
The Biological Fact: Meeting the Analogue Dog
When we bring a dog into our homes, we are welcoming an evolutionary marvel that operates on a thousands-of-years-old biological timeline. You cannot install a high-speed fibre-optic cable into an ancient canine nervous system. You can’t download a perfect recall or fast-forward through adolescence. When the digital impulse for speed collides with the reality of canine biology, the results are scientifically catastrophic.
Yet, there is a profound irony here. I deeply hope that a generation known for being the most socially conscious and emotionally articulate, one that thoroughly understands ethics and advocates fiercely for inclusivity so that no group is oppressed, can extend that exact same logic to the future welfare of dogs.
By using force to fast-forward the training process, modern owners are missing a beautiful opportunity. This generation has been systematically robbed of quiet spaces to decompress, but their analogue dog is offering them a roadmap back to peace.
If they can bring themselves to close the apps and simply listen, their dog can teach them how to slow down, how to breathe, and how to exist in the present moment. True connection will never be found in a device or a quick-fix button; it is built in the quiet, patient architecture of an analogue bond.
