Embarking on the path to becoming a qualified canine behaviourist has been one of the most intense yet deeply rewarding experiences of my life. Looking back at the years of hard work, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the clinical knowledge I’ve gained and the academic challenges I’ve overcome.
For my clients across Belfast, County Down, and Antrim, I wanted to share exactly what goes on behind the scenes to achieve this level of qualification—and why it matters so much for your dogs.
Why I Chose COAPE (Centre of Applied Pet Ethology)
When I began my journey, I knew I wanted to align myself with an educational body that shared my strict ethical values and uncompromising commitment to animal welfare. That is when I discovered the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology (COAPE).
COAPE’s curriculum deeply resonated with me because of its fierce emphasis on positive reinforcement, non-aversive methods, and cutting-edge science. The live lectures provided an engaging, rigorous platform to learn directly from leading veterinary and behavioural professionals, allowing me to dive deep into complex case studies in real-time.
Furthermore, the program is universally respected and highly recommended by my peers in the industry, making it the obvious choice for my advanced studies.
🎓 What is a Level 6 Qualification?
It is equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree with Honours, requiring advanced academic research, clinical analysis, and practical behavioural application.
The Commitment: Balancing Study and Teaching Tails
Over two years, I dedicated countless hours to reading scientific papers, studying canine anatomy, and preparing for comprehensive written examinations for each module. The curriculum was unforgiving. It required me to dive deep into the fascinating world of canine behavioral science—specifically exploring how nature, nurture, neuroscience, physical health, and environmental factors all intersect to influence a dog's emotional state.
As part of my qualification, I had to complete exhaustive, real-world clinical case studies. This allowed me to apply complex theoretical knowledge to actual behavioral struggles, proving I could safely modify behaviour on the ground.
Balancing this intensive, high-level academic program while running Teaching Tails classes and conducting mobile 1-2-1 visits was no easy feat. There were days when I felt entirely overwhelmed. However, my absolute passion for truly understanding the "why" behind a dog's distress kept me motivated every single night.
Achieving Success: Top of the Class (93%)
all the late nights and hard work, I was ecstatic to finish at the very top of my graduating class with an overall average of 93%.
Receiving that final grade not only validated every ounce of effort I put in, but it also ignited an even deeper desire to keep pushing the boundaries of my education.
I firmly believe that achieving this Level 6 Practitioner status is not the end of my learning journey; rather, it is just the beginning. The world of animal behavior and veterinary science is constantly evolving, and I am entirely dedicated to staying at the absolute cutting edge of modern research.
What This Means for You and Your Dog
My ultimate goal is to take this advanced scientific knowledge and translate it into practical, down-to-earth support for you and your dog. I don't just look at a symptom (like barking or lunging) and try to suppress it. Instead, I use my COAPE training to look at the whole picture—nutrition, sleep, underlying pain, and emotional frustration—to find the root cause of the issue.
I want to share these insights with you so we can relieve your dog's anxiety, build their confidence, and fundamentally transform your relationship with your companion.
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey. I look forward to helping you and your dogs thrive together safely, ethically, and scientifically!
