If you are looking for the absolute holy grail of dog training rewards, look no further. This is my signature, tried-and-tested Homemade Liver Cake recipe.

As a certified trainer, I can tell you that when it comes to teaching complex behaviours, building a reliable off-lead recall, or working through teenage reactivity, your standard supermarket dog biscuits aren't going to cut it.

You need a high-value reward that smells incredible and tastes even better.

This liver cake is highly aromatic, packed with pure protein, and completely irresistible to dogs. Best of all, it makes a massive batch that you can easily portion out and freeze for future training sessions!

🛒 The Ingredients

  • 300g Fresh Liver (Lamb or chicken liver works beautifully)

  • 150g Spelt Flour (See note below on why this is my top choice!)

  • 1 Large Egg

  • 1 Teaspoon Coconut Oil (Plus a little extra for greasing the tray)

🌾 A NOTE ON FLOUR: I love using spelt flour for my dogs because it is an ancient grain that is significantly more gentle on canine digestion than standard modern white flour. Spelt contains a much more fragile, water-soluble gluten structure, making it incredibly easy for sensitive dog bellies to break down. It is also packed with natural fibre and B vitamins. However, if you don't have spelt in your cupboard, standard plain white flour works completely fine as an alternative binder to hold the cake together!

🍳 Simple Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.

  2. Blend the base: Pop the liver, flour, egg, and a teaspoon of coconut oil into a food processor or blender. Whiz it all together until you get a completely smooth, liquid mixture.

  3. Prep the tray: Use a tiny bit of extra coconut oil to lightly grease the base of a baking tray. (I find a 15x20cm tray gives the perfect thickness!)

  4. Bake: Pour the smooth mixture evenly into your tray and smooth it down. Pop it into the oven for 25 minutes.

  5. Cool and shape: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack.

  6. The Fun Part: Once cooled, you can use cute mini cookie cutters (like the bone and paw shapes shown in the photo) to punch out neat shapes, or simply slice the cake into tiny, pea-sized training pieces.

  7. Portion it up: Bag up what you need for the week, and chuck the rest into the freezer!

💡 TRAINER WARNING: Prepare for your dog to be utterly, hopelessly excited throughout this entire process. The smell of baking liver will have them velcroed to your kitchen floor!

🪄 The Trainer’s Secret: Pea-Sized is Perfect (With One Big Exception!)

When you are out training across Belfast or practicing your focus work in our Carryduff classes, the size of your treat matters.

For most dogs, you want your reward pieces to be no larger than a garden pea. Why? Because you want your dog to be able to swallow the reward instantly and get right back to focusing on you. If the treat is too big, they spend 30 seconds chewing it on the grass, losing all their training momentum. A tiny bite of this liver cake delivers a massive punch of flavor without filling their tummy too quickly.

🐾 The Bull Breed Exception:

Unless you have a bull breed or a dog with large, lovely jowls! For these dogs, your treats should be cut a little larger—aim for the size of your pinky fingernail. Why? Because tiny, pea-sized treats easily get lost inside those big, smiley jaws. If they can't actually feel or taste the reward, training becomes confusing and frustrating for them rather than rewarding. We want them to instantly feel that texture so they can enjoy their win and stay fully engaged in the game!
