To help you get ahead of the game, I have put together the ultimate Teaching Tails Puppy Checklist. This is exactly what you need to prepare your home before that little bundle of fluff arrives at your door.

🐾 The Basics

• Comfortable Harness: Essential for protecting your puppy's delicate throat and neck from pulling damage. A harness allows them to get into a natural position for sniffing, which instantly helps calm and slow down the walk.

• Fixed Lead (4–6 feet): Keeps your puppy safely close during neighborhood walks and aids focus during indoor training. Strictly avoid extendable leads.

• Soft, Comfortable Bed: Somewhere cosy and dedicated to getting that much-needed puppy rest.

• Hot Water Bottle: Wrap this securely in a blanket to give your pup a warm, soothing surface that mimics their littermates.

🥩 Feeding Time

• Stainless Steel or Ceramic Bowls: One for fresh water, one for food. Look into raised dishes if you are bringing home a large breed puppy.

• Single-Ingredient Treats: Look for high-value rewards with the shortest ingredient lists.

• Treat Pouch: Guess what? You are a dog trainer now! Every good trainer carries a treat bag, especially in those vital early weeks. It allows you to instantly capture and reward the good behaviors your puppy offers.

💩 Toilet Training Essentials

• Lots and Lots of Poo Bags: At the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), we have a golden rule: "Two is one, and one is none." If you only take two poo bags out on a walk, your puppy will absolutely poop three times. Trust me on this one!

• Puppy Pads (The Alternative Option): If you live in a flat or apartment without quick garden access, puppy pads are highly absorbent. Top Tip: Cut a few pads up and keep the pieces handy for quick, disposable mop-ups. Another Tip I dont use puppy pads where there is quick access to a garden as it can cause confusion for the puppy as sometime it’s ok to go inside sometimes it’s not. Set them up to success from the start by being consistent on taking them outside to toilet!

• Enzymatic Cleaner: Essential for breaking down proteins. Puppies will naturally return to the exact same spot to do their business if they smell a previous accident. Standard household cleaners won't cut it, but enzymatic cleaners erase the scent entirely.

• Pet-Friendly Disinfectant: Use this first to eliminate harmful bacteria, then follow up with your enzymatic spray. Always ensure any chemical you use is 100% pet-safe!

🧼 Grooming & Oral Health

• Soft Puppy Brush & Comb: Introduce this slowly and gently while they are young so they get used to the sensation of being handled. The exact type will depend entirely on their coat.

• Toothbrush & Dog Toothpaste: Yes, really! Getting your puppy comfortable with teeth cleaning in the early days is essential for their long-term oral hygiene.

• Mild Puppy Shampoo: Formulated specifically to be gentle on their delicate skin and coat.

• Nail Clippers: While all dogs need their nails trimmed, if you don't have experience, this is a job best left to the professional groomers to avoid catching the quick and causing a fear of paw-handling.

🧸 Enrichment & Toys

• Durable Chew Toys: An absolute must for teething puppies. Providing high-quality chew toys will save your hands, feet, furniture, and favorite shoes!

• Rope Toys: Brilliant for letting them sink their sharp little teeth into, and excellent for a gentle game of tug where you can begin teaching a reliable "Drop" cue.

• Squeaky Toys: Fantastic visual and auditory targets for teaching a fun game of fetch.

• Interactive Brain Toys: Kongs, snuffle mats, lick mats, and treat-dispensing puzzle balls. Stimulating your puppy's brain is the fastest way to tire them out constructively and is invaluable for positive crate association.

🛠️ The Trainer’s Secret Weapons

• The Puppy Crate: Used correctly, a crate is the ultimate training sanctuary. It speeds up toilet training and provides a secure "den" where your puppy can happily relax with a chew toy. Used incorrectly as a punishment, it will cause distress. Proper crate training takes patience!

• Puppy Playpen: A safe containment area where your puppy can enjoy interactive puzzle feeders or naps when you cannot physically keep both eyes on them.

• Baby Gates: The easiest way to block off rooms or carpeted areas while your pup is still learning house training rules.

📜 The Legalities (Northern Ireland Rules)

• ID Tag and Collar: By law, your puppy must wear a collar with an ID tag inscribed with your name and address whenever they are in a public space.

• Microchip Registration: Usually done by the breeder or rescue. However, it is your legal responsibility to ensure the microchip database is updated with your correct contact details.

• Northern Ireland Dog Licence: Crucial step! Unlike the rest of the UK, all dog owners in Northern Ireland must hold a valid dog licence. You can easily apply for this online through your local council (Belfast, Lisburn & Castlereagh, Ards & North Down, etc.), but you must have your puppy's valid microchip number to apply.

• The Highway Code (Rule 57): When traveling in a vehicle, dogs must be suitably restrained (via a crash-tested car harness, crate, or dog guard) so they cannot distract the driver or cause injury during a sudden stop.

💡 Food For Thought Before Day One

Do Not Skip Insurance

Most vets offer four weeks of free puppy insurance. Please look into locking down a lifetime policy before that free trial expires. I regularly see puppies in my training classes who pick up an illness or swallow a random foreign object, and emergency veterinary care is incredibly expensive.

Some owners prefer to save £10 a month in a pot instead of paying for insurance. But if your pup needs emergency surgery in month six, a pot of £60 won't even cover the out-of-hours consultation fee.
